For all of the rather oppressive rules that a lot of cities enact, they still will often allow people to have hobby towers of a particular height on their property. While this might be a trifle annoying for your neighbors, it can allow you to both send and receive a lot of signals. While having your setup in your basement might be a fun little “bat cave” fantasy for you, it is obvious that having a large antenna above the ground is going to be your best bet for getting great reception. And strangely enough, most cities will even allow you to build a tower that is substantially taller than your home is. However, when you build your tower, you do want to consider a few things that are very important.
The first thing is, how tall are you allowed to build your radio tower? If you build it even a foot higher than the law allows, a city inspector could theoretically come out (even years later) and order you to tear it down. Inspectors are famous for throwing their weight around when they believe that something is going to prove to be a nuissance later on down the line. Once you know this, you are going to want to get all of the necessary permits that your locale expects you to have.
Once that process is through with, you are going to want to decide whether you can actually build your tower by yourself. If you do not feel comfortable with the task of building the thing, hire someone else to help you with it. Even if all you do is hire a contractor to help you with preparing a solid foundation for it, that will go a long way toward making sure that it is both functional and safe. After all, an unsafe tower could literally kill someone. And what point is there to having a tower if it can’t fulfill its purpose?
